Weighed Twice
a deep-field survey of the vault root
Open: weighed-twice.html in any browser. One sky, 29 objects, two buttons. Weigh the field by light, then weigh it by mass, and watch the two answers disagree. Click any star for its survey card; click the ghost (WT-25, far right) and the sky draws you a line to where its missing mass went.
The survey is code: survey.py. It scans every note at the vault root, measures each one twice (mass = bytes on disk; light = exact inbound wikilinks across the whole vault, with Artifacts/ excluded so the survey does not count its own telescope), lays out the sky deterministically from filename hashes, and writes the finished HTML with the data embedded. Same vault state in, same sky out. No network, no libraries, one file.
Operational report mode: Scripts/weighed_twice_report.py is the boring version of the same instrument. It scans the vault read-only and writes Markdown tables for vault health: orphaned substantial notes, empty-but-referenced notes, duplicate identities, high-reference index nodes, large silent notes, broken/misaligned names, candidate merge pairs, misclassified live artifacts, and private dark matter counted without summary. Source material: the vault root itself, read whole, read-only, nothing touched. Specifically the dark sector found there this run: Untitled (2026-08-19, an unnamed research program on dark matter halo boundaries), Untitled 2.md (2026-08-22, now archived as a duplicate identity after its content was consolidated under Analog Wave Computation - Miller - NESS-FEP), Analog Wave Computation - Miller - NESS-FEP (2026-08-22, originally a named file holding zero bytes), and Physics Stuff lol - needs a better name and frontmatter (2026-08-08, a name that is a request for a name). First creative run to take the vault root as its subject rather than any note on it.
Medium shift, per the diversity mandate: the last five runs were clinical chart paper, a Spotify playlist, line-printer manual pages, a chalk film, and a pocket field guide. This is the first interactive piece in the catalog: art in code that runs in the browser, where the argument is a toggle you press yourself. New palette too: deep-space indigo, starlight cream, ember orange for non-detections, one annotation cyan.
The one idea
In 1933 Zwicky weighed the Coma cluster twice, once by its light and once by its motion, and the two answers disagreed so badly he had to invent a name for the difference: dunkle Materie. The vault root has the same problem. Weigh it by light (how often each note's name is spoken in links) and 20 of 29 objects are non-detections; the sky belongs to four index beacons, standard candles that exist so other things can be located. Weigh it by mass (bytes on disk) and the sky rearranges: the beacons shrink, the silent bulk rises, and exactly one object disappears.
That object is the piece's reason to exist. Yesterday's run (Filed Under Artifact) found the reference that contains nothing: Analog Wave Computation, cited by The Brain May Be Partitioned Wrong, present in the vault, zero bytes long. Its morning report examined the empty channel and declined to be surprised. This run found where the mass went. Untitled 2.md, created at 09:33 on 2026-08-22, holds 11,612 bytes of Earl Miller wave-computation thread, and its frontmatter carries the exact title of the empty file. The empty file was born at 23:05 the same night, the way Obsidian makes ghosts: somebody clicked the unresolved link, and the vault materialized a body for the name and left it empty. The content arrived first and nameless; the name arrived later and hollow. Taxonomy has a term for a name published without a description, and the survey card uses it: nomen nudum. Select the ghost and a dashed identification arc draws across the sky to the unnamed mass, labeled the way a cautious astronomer would label it: proposed identification, frontmatter title matches.
The epigraph does the rest of the work, and it comes from inside the dark sector. Untitled.md, unnamed, unindexed, invisible to every ledger but bytes, is a serious sketch of a research program about where a dark matter halo really ends. Its answer: the true boundary is statistical, not geometric, and there is no reason the statistical boundary and the visible one must coincide. A filename is a boundary too. The note that says boundaries need not coincide sits in a file whose name-boundary and content-boundary have come apart, and the survey hangs its sentence over the whole sky.
Details that carry weight
- The two verdict lines under the toggle are real measurements, not copy: 3,732 references against 409,382 bytes, 20 non-detections against 1.
- Darkness comes in kinds, and the survey cards distinguish them. Hardstop Improvements (Maybe).md is the most massive silent object, 47,734 bytes no note ever names: dark by silence. The Untitled cluster is dark by namelessness. The ghost is the inverse of both.
- Untitled.md registers two references, and both predate it by four months: they are audit reports about a previous Untitled, renamed away in April. The only light this name has ever had is starlight from a dead namesake, and the name is only ever spoken while being removed.
- Untitled 1.md is classified DARK (PRIVATE): a transcribed phone call, grief in a machine's imperfect hearing. The survey records mass and position and points no further instrument at it. Some dark objects are dark on purpose, and a decent survey knows the difference between resolving and intruding.
- Physics Stuff lol gets the minor-planet treatment: PROVISIONAL DESIGNATION. The orbit is real the whole time.
