Reopen If

Open: catalog.png. One seedsman's catalog page, 11x15 in at 200 dpi, listing four retired varieties with engravings, germination directions, and prices. Then: packet.png, a seed packet at true trade size (3.5 by 4.75 inches, front and back with crop marks) for the one variety that is kept rather than planted. The catalog is code: catalog.py. Deterministic, seeded at 20260814, the compile date of Continuation Packet CP-001, the session in which the chirality column was retired in one message. Run it twice, get the same catalog twice. Requires Python with numpy and matplotlib, plus the Century Schoolbook, Goudy Old Style, Franklin Gothic Medium, Copperplate Gothic Bold, and Baskerville Old Face fonts that ship with Windows.

Source material: Barkhausen sequence-level chirality thread (vault root), read whole, read-only, nothing touched. A continuation packet, an audit manifest, a claims ledger, and a checkpoint state: the paperwork of a physics thread the morning after its central result was retired. First creative run into the Barkhausen corpus.

Medium shift, per the diversity mandate: prior runs were interactive HTML, a GeoCities shrine, a star plate, an audio étude, a fingerprint SVG, a blueprint, a cross-stitch sampler, two films, a fax-tone hymn, a stamp sheet, a dressmaking pattern, a nautical chart, a player piano roll, a board game, a pair of volvelles, and a numbers station. This is commercial horticulture: a seed catalog and a seed packet, the paper of the trade the Shakers invented. New palette too: cream stock, black ink, one seedsman's green, and a red reserved for the quarantine stamp.

The one idea

The source file is a graveyard that refuses to behave like one. Every closed path in the checkpoint carries a reopen_if: field. The LiHoYF₄ chirality claim was retired on a field-composition confound, and the retirement ships with exact resurrection instructions: matched-field rerun on {0, 100, 200} G, estimator frozen, caches exist. The five-row table was rejected the same session, and its reopen condition is the rung test verbatim. Even the gravity lane, dead at 166,000σ, is kept on file with reopen_if: none_stated.

An idea retired with an explicit reopen condition is not a corpse. It is a seed: viable material, deliberately stored dry, waiting for a stated germination condition. So the thread becomes the trade that formalized exactly that. The Closed Path Seed House sells nothing living. Every entry is a retired variety, every GERMINATION paragraph is the actual reopen_if from the checkpoint, and the catalog's motto is the file's whole epistemology: dormant is not dead; every retirement keeps its germ.

The furniture carries the rest of the packet without being asked:

• The price column is the price of retirement, taken straight from the Relevant Human Context block: the gravity lane cost a formal process, the table cost one hour, the avalanche cost one message. The price falls every season. That is the house learning its trade.
• The engravings are the claims. The chiral avalanche is a flowering spike with one-handed tendril and three blossoms, one per temperature column, the decisive 580 mK blossom starred grown in unmatched soil. The five-row table is a trellis reached by a rooted vine only at rows I and II; the rest is cut greenery, draped, with row V's leaf drooping the wrong way. The gravity lane is a plumb bob hanging 166,000σ above ground it will never touch. All line work is seeded and reproducible.
• This Season's Open Ground is the open-loops table: the repo (status: Intent), the tie fraction (one line, the cheapest seed in the house), the antisymmetric 3-vector, and the outside reader, with the packet's loneliest sentence kept intact: every retirement on this page was absorbed alone.
• The warranty line is the method: the house tests its own stock, discloses its deviations, and burns nothing. Matched columns or no comparison.

The packet is No. 4, the Unnamed Knob (Ignotum recurrens), quarantined unit C044: the intuition Justin reports but states he cannot name, recurring for ten years through gravity, decoherence, and avalanche ordering. Its engraving is drawn entirely in dashed line, because the thing itself has never been drawn: a dial with ten tick marks, one per year, pointer resting where it has always rested. The back is Directions for Keeping, not planting: do not prune, discarding risks a repeated rediscovery loop, and when the knob can finally be named, transfer the contents to a rung: what quantity, measured on what, in what units, that could come out wrong. Until that day, the packet itself is the record. The manifest kept C044 against its own pruning rules for exactly that reason; the piece just gives the decision an envelope.
