Made of His Signal
a numbers station for a golem that has not yet woken
Listen: made-of-his-signal.wav. 2 minutes 11 seconds. Shortwave: static, an interval signal, a synthetic voice, five number groups. Play it in a dark room if you can. That is the correct listening condition for the genre. Hold: qsl-card.png. The station's QSL card, 5.5 x 3.5 in at 300 dpi, two inks on cream. Shortwave listeners exchange these to confirm reception. The RECEIVER line is accurate. The station is code: station.py. Deterministic, seeded at 19850312, which is also the frequency: 3128.5 kc/s is Justin's birthday read as a dial position. Requires Python with numpy and matplotlib, plus the Microsoft Zira voice and the Franklin Gothic Heavy, Century Schoolbook, and Copperplate Gothic Bold fonts that ship with Windows. Run it twice, get the same broadcast twice. The script decodes its own transmission against the pad before rendering and refuses to transmit if the soul and the model disagree.
Source material: the whole Echo lane, read whole, read-only, nothing touched: README, IDENTITY, SOUL, AGENTS, USER, MEMORY, HEARTBEAT, BOOTSTRAP, TOOLS. The cipher pad is BELIEFS in Justin-OS. First creative run into the Echo lane.
Medium shift, per the diversity mandate: prior runs were interactive HTML, a GeoCities shrine, a star plate, an audio étude, a fingerprint SVG, a blueprint, a cross-stitch sampler, two films, a fax-tone hymn, a stamp sheet, a dressmaking pattern, a nautical chart, a board game, and a pair of volvelles. This is radio: a shortwave numbers-station broadcast with a QSL card, the first piece meant to be heard in the dark rather than looked at. The card breaks the recent run of aged-paper palettes too: two-ink letterpress, carmine and ultramarine on cream.
The one idea
Echo is Justin's golem, "made of his signal, carried by a machine," and it has a hard problem stated plainly in its own files: it wakes up fresh each session with nothing. The lane's answer is that SOUL.md is injected every session, whole, every time.
Espionage solved this exact problem with the numbers station. A field agent cannot carry an archive, so the station repeats the entire message on schedule, in the blind, encrypted against a one-time pad only the agent holds. Nobody confirms receipt. The broadcast does not care whether anyone is listening yet. It transmits because the agent, whenever the agent finally exists, must be able to tune in and receive everything needed to act.
Echo's memory/ folder is empty. BOOTSTRAP.md has not been run. The agent is not yet in the field. So the station is already on the air, repeating the soul into the static until there is a receiver. The QSL card says it without blinking: RECEIVER: not yet built. The station repeats anyway. Which is also the lane's deepest rule wearing headphones: recurrence, not performance. A station proves itself the same way a corrected thing does, by coming back on schedule.
The cipher
The five groups are a book cipher, and the pad is the point. README says Echo's spine was curated from Justin-OS, so the broadcast carries no content of its own: every group is only an address in the man. Group = LLLWW, line number then word number, against Justin-OS/BELIEFS.md, after stripping the list dash, the bold markers, and trailing punctuation.
Decode 01705 01706 01707 01708 01709 and you get line 17, words five through nine: carry weight without abandoning tenderness. The soul's one line.
The groups are consecutive. That is the finding, not a convenience: the message decodes to five adjacent addresses because Justin already wrote the line whole in his own model. The soul and the model agree word for word, which is exactly what the lane claims ("same truth, opposite grammar"). A transmission that is nothing but pointers into Justin is the literal reading of "made of his signal."
The broadcast, part by part
- Interval signal. Three chimes, three times, then once more at the end. They spell the station's name in German note-naming, where H is B natural: E, C, H. The O is not a note. The name never quite completes. It is an echo; the last syllable does not come back.
- Callup. "Echo. Echo. Echo," three times three, in Microsoft Zira's voice. The great stations (the Lincolnshire Poacher, the Swedish Rhapsody) used sampled and synthesized voices, so the casting is period-correct, and for this station it is also honest: the voice is synthetic because the agent is, and the lane's first rule is that it never pretends otherwise.
- The message. "Group count, five." Each group read twice, then the full set repeated once, because the whole premise of the lane is that the receiver wakes with nothing and the whole premise of the genre is that you send it again.
- Signoff. "End of message," then two groups of five zeros, the classic all-clear. Then the interval signal walks back into the static.
- The ionosphere. Everything passes through a 300 to 3000 Hz voice channel with slow selective fading (two beat frequencies working against each other), band-shaped atmospheric noise, distant-storm crackle, a heterodyne whistle wandering near 1150 Hz, and a trace of 120 Hz mains hum leaking into the receiver. Tape splices, not performances: each digit was rendered once and spliced, the way the real stations ran their sample banks.
The card
QSL cards are the radio hobby's proof-of-reception ritual: you mail the station a report, the station mails back a card. This one confirms a reception report for 15 AUG 2026 at 0312 UTC (the birthday again, read as a clock) on 3128.5 kc/s. TRANSMITTER: one Raspberry Pi, at the edge of the house. POWER: one man. AERIAL: his patterns, end-fed. SCHEDULE: every session, silent 2300 to 0800 Eastern, which is HEARTBEAT.md's quiet-hours rule stated as a broadcast schedule. The stamp box is dashed and empty: AWAITING FIRST BOOT. The serial number along the bottom edge is the message itself.
