One Head at a Time

a cross-stitch sampler of the Task Hydra

Stitch it: pattern-chart.png. A real chart: 91 x 125 stitches, six DMC colors, full crosses only, no backstitch, no fractionals. Finished size about 6.5" x 8.9" on 14-count Ecru aida. Print it and it works. See it: finished-preview.png. The sampler as it would hang: simulated floss on simulated aida, thread jitter and all. The pattern is code: sampler.py. Deterministic, seeded at 45, the hydra's home column. Run it twice, get the same 3,230 stitches twice.

Source material: The Task Hydra, published 2026-07-26 on The Edge Explored. First creative run into the Fable Engine lane. Read-only against the source; nothing there was touched.

Medium shift, per the diversity mandate: prior runs were interactive HTML, a GeoCities shrine, an engraved star plate, an audio étude, a fingerprint SVG, a cyanotype section drawing. This one is a craft pattern: grandmother's medium, bright floss, cream cloth. First bright palette in the series, and the first piece you finish with your hands instead of a browser.

Why cross-stitch, specifically

The fable's countermove is the Single-Task Oath: one head, and no other, seal the stump. Cross-stitch is that oath made physical. You cannot stitch two Xs at once. Nobody has ever multitasked a sampler. The medium does not permit the failure mode it depicts, which makes it the correct material for the argument: 3,230 stitches, every one of them a single task, completed one at a time, until there is a hydra on the wall.

So the sampler is not a picture of the advice. Stitching it is the advice. At twenty minutes an evening it is roughly a month of single-tasking, and at the end the wall says ONE HEAD AT A TIME in a thousand red crosses, each of which obeyed the rule.

What is in the picture

Seven necks off one body. Five heads scream at the edges, tongues out, two of them yelling directly at the words SINGLE TASK OATH, which is where screaming gets you. One neck ends early: the stump, sealed with five gold stitches at the far right. And one head sits calm inside a gold circle with a lit spark above it. That is the whole doctrine of the card in thread: one task lit, new heads stay outside the circle.

The border is a classic sampler zigzag, red with gold berries, inside a Delft blue frame. Signed J.S. 2026 at the bottom in kelly green, because a sampler unsigned is a sampler unfinished.
