North by Subtraction

Open: sheet1-cover.png through sheet5-horizon.png, five sheets of one passport: the cover, the identity spread, the visas of the front half, the hinge and the exit visas, and the amendments facing the last border. Read them in order. The document has ten pages because the book has ten chapters, and the last page is the only one without ink.

The document is code: passport.py. Deterministic, seeded at 20260607, the day both story-bible seeds were written. Run it twice, get the same passport twice. Requires Python with numpy and matplotlib, plus the Copperplate Gothic Bold, Book Antiqua, Palatino Linotype, Courier New, and Segoe Script fonts that ship with Windows. The guilloche underprint, the stamp erosion, and the wave lattice are all generated; nothing is a texture file.

Source material: the Suitcase of Almosts corpus in Creative Projects, read whole, read-only, nothing touched: the integrated story bible v2 (2026-07-04, which supersedes the seed), the seed, and the working-title pitch (which is where the bearer's name lives). First creative run into the Creative Projects lane, anywhere in it, ever.

Medium shift, per the diversity mandate: the last five runs were a photocopy film, an interactive sky survey, a patent file wrapper, a sonification, and a working font. This is a travel document, the first passport in the catalog: spruce-green cover with blind gold, security-lattice interior, port-of-entry stamps in four inks. The stamp sheet of March was postage; this is the other kind of stamp, the kind that closes borders.

The one idea

The story bible's diagnosis is one sentence: arrow-loss is the refusal to let any option close. Its cure is the Curator, who files every surrendered future so that a direction can exist at all. A man whose disease is keeping borders open, healed by an office that stamps them shut: that man's story wants to be told as the document you carry between countries. So the piece issues it. Every world in the suitcase becomes a port. Every value becomes a border conflict, because the bible's breakthrough was that the constants collide (loyalty against truth, love against freedom, stability against wonder). Every closure becomes a stamp, and identity is established the way the bible says it is: not by the photo, but by what the bearer refuses to abandon.

The passport walks the book's own architecture:

• Front half (pp. 4–5, chapters two through five). Four entry visas in violet, four collection stamps in slate: MISREAD, OVERSTAYED, DID NOT COMMIT, each botched branch filed with the note "surrendered unconsciously; authorization on file (unread)," because the bible's sharpest tooth is that the bearer's signature authorizes the collection, and he signed without reading, as is customary.
• The hinge (p. 6, chapter six). The one green stamp in the book: BRANCH RETAINED BY BEARER, COLLECTION DEFEATED, KEPT, with "finally." in the bearer's hand beside it. Then the post-entry review in corrective red, filed later in other ink: the retained branch orients nothing; he fought to keep it and reports himself more lost. The office notes, without satisfaction, that it was never robbing him. The win curdles on the same page it lands, which is the precision beat the bible calls the hardest single thing to write.
• Back half (p. 7, chapters seven through nine). Three exit visas in oxblood, RELINQUISHED WITH FULL KNOWLEDGE, each countersigned by the bearer's own hand, each signature larger and less steady than the one before. Surrender with full knowledge is the unbearable version, and the last is hardest by design.
• The last border (p. 9, chapter ten). PORT OF HORIZON, stamped weakly, and beneath it two empty dashed wells: ADMISSION and REFUSAL, both labeled "( costs )." The office records how the bearer chooses, not which. The page says so, then says THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT UNSTAMPED, because the bible ends the book at the decision without showing which way he goes.

Details that carry weight

• The cover emblem is a suitcase with a compass rose set into it, and the compass has no needle. The caption under it: the needle is not supplied. North is what remains after subtraction, and subtraction is the interior of the document; the motto runs at the head of every page.
• The Curator and the Guide are one figure in v2, so the Directorate maintains two counters served by one clerk: questions asked at the first, futures filed at the second. Travelers who petition to see the clerk's superior are shown a mirror, per regulation. There is exactly one seal in the whole document.
• Amendment 2 states the bible's cruelest reveal in the office's own idiom: this document is the most sophisticated form of the bearer's condition, pages enough to visit forever and never live one. The cure and the disease share a cover. A passport is a suitcase you can carry in one hand.
• The open beams are honored, not smoothed. INITIAL REFUSAL on the identity page reads NOT YET ON RECORD (open beam No. 1), in the file's own typewriter. The Port of Horizon is stamped "designation provisional — name-collision review pending," which is open beam No. 4 verbatim. Two visas carry CATEGORY BREACH per the bible's taxonomy-break rule: the childhood drawing that opened onto systems, and the object older than civilization that opened onto a kitchen, a Tuesday.
• The bearer is MERCER, CAL (working), because only the working-title pitch names him and the integrated bible declines to. The parenthesis is on the passport. Document No. ALM-1985-0607: born 1985, issued the day the seed was written.
• The machine-readable zone is machine-honest: ALM19850607<NORTH<IS<WHAT<REMAINS<AFTER<SUBT, truncated by the zone, the way an MRZ actually truncates what does not fit.
• The ledger on p. 8 balances: 4 collected unread, 3 relinquished by hand, 1 retained (orients nothing), 1 page remaining. Ten pages, ten chapters, one unstamped.
