a file wrapper from The Commit Office

sheet1 front page sheet2 drawings sheet3 claims sheet4 office action sheet5 register card

Open: sheet1-front-page.png through sheet5-register-card.png, five sheets of a patent file wrapper from a fictional patent office for claims: front page and filing receipt, formal drawings, the ten claims as filed, the examiner's office action, and the office's own ledger card for the application. Read them in order; item 5 of the office action is the finding, and the register card is the point.

The wrapper is code: patent.py. Deterministic, seeded at 20260813, the filing date. Run it twice, get the same wrapper twice. Requires Python with numpy and matplotlib, plus the Century Schoolbook, Franklin Gothic Medium, and Courier New fonts that ship with Windows.

Source material: Hardstop Improvements (Maybe) (vault root, written 2026-08-13, 9:00 to 9:24 P.M., one sitting), read whole, read-only, nothing touched. Supporting facts verified read-only against the local C:\Users\Justin\Hardstop repository: commit fb1cbaa, merge PR #105, docs/ROADMAP.md, and the current state of alert_builder.py. First creative run into this note, which Weighed Twice (8/24) measured as the heaviest object at the vault root that no note ever names: 47,734 bytes, dark by silence.

Medium shift, per the diversity mandate: the last five runs were a sonification, a working TrueType font, an interactive HTML sky survey, clinical chart paper, and a Spotify playlist. This is a patent file wrapper, the first legal document in the catalog: INID-coded front page, numbered claims with an examiner's margin pencil, reference-numeral drawings, a typewritten office action. New palette too: ivory wrapper stock, iron-gall black, and stamp-pad violet, the classic office ink, spent on nothing but the stamps and the examiner's pencil.

The one idea

The note is a 47,734-byte architecture for deciding when a claim may be committed: claims in a ledger, evidence captured, a verification cascade, a commit gate, supersession states. It is also the only note in the vault that fully practices the discipline it proposes. It cites nine sources against itself, corrects itself twice in its own hand ("My prior WAL statement was wrong," "You were right"), and in its second half inspects the actual repo and narrows its own claims from a grand general system to one bounded change. A document about claims that runs its own prosecution is a patent application wearing a trench coat, so the piece files it properly, with a claims office built on the note's own rules: the examiner receives a bounded packet and is shown no confidence.

The genre mapping took no force. The note's arXiv citations are prior art of record. Its mid-document self-narrowing is a preliminary amendment, claims 1–4 withdrawn by the applicant before the examiner reached them. Its ten decisions are the claim set. And the filename's "(Maybe)" is the status marker PROPOSED, worn honestly in the name.

What the run verified, and what it found

The premise going in was the survey's: heaviest silent object, zero inbound links, presumed abandoned. The git log said otherwise, and every fact below went on the sheets only after being checked:

So the finding on sheet 5: the "(Maybe)" is not a stale doubt. By the note's own mandatory rules, "a published artifact receives a corrected successor; the original audit record remains intact." The successor issued in git. The original stayed intact in the vault. What the ledger lacked was one dependency edge, not one truth, and the register card draws it: TRIGGERED → fb1cbaa, same night. This NOTE's wikilink to the source is that edge made real; the run raises the note's inbound citations from zero without editing a byte of it.
