The Paper Remembers
Dock Roll No. 0418, a word roll for player piano
Watch: roll-performance.mp4. 1 minute 26 seconds, sound on. The roll scrolls over the tracker bar, the holes light amber as they play, and at the end it rewinds, because it will be needed again tomorrow. Listen alone: performance.wav. The whole performance: three passes, five punches, one rewind. Print: roll-print.png. The complete roll laid out in five spools, time running upward as on the machine. Still: poster.png, the leader and the first bars. The roll is code: roll.py. Deterministic, seeded at 20260418, the day the Dock was established. Run it twice, get the same 2,576 frames and the same 85.9 seconds twice. Requires Python with numpy and Pillow, ffmpeg, and the Stencil, Franklin Gothic, and Century Schoolbook fonts that ship with Windows.
Source material: the whole Dock lane, read whole, read-only, nothing touched: 00_THE_DOCK_INDEX, Corrections, Daily Floors README, Session Log Archive README, and the tail of dock-execute-log.md. The Tarot project folder inside the lane was not read or referenced, per its standing hard exclusion. First creative run into The Dock lane.
Medium shift, per the diversity mandate: prior runs were interactive HTML, a GeoCities shrine, a star plate, an audio étude, a fingerprint SVG, a blueprint, a cross-stitch sampler, a film of rain, a stamp sheet, a dressmaking pattern, and, this morning, a nautical chart. This is mechanical music: a player piano word roll, the image and the audio punched from one dataset, so the picture and the sound are the same object. New palette too: manila paper, punch-black, and stencil red.
The one idea
The Dock introduces itself like this: "I show up with tools, do work, leave. I forget between sessions." Its operating principle says the rest: "Don't rely on in-head memory. If it matters across sessions, it gets written."
The player piano is the only instrument ever built on that doctrine. The pianist keeps nothing. Every note, every rest, every correction lives in the paper, and each morning the machine performs, flawlessly, music it has no memory of ever playing. The roll is the session log. The pneumatics are the operator. So the Dock gets its portrait in the one medium that already works exactly the way the Dock does.
The piece is three passes of the same eight-bar rag and a rewind:
- Pass one, as punched, April. The tune with five wrong notes, one for each entry in the append-only Corrections ledger. Each wrong hole is ringed in red on the paper with its date and its generalized rule stenciled in the margin: 4/18 promotion is Justin's call, 5/04 available is not permitted, 5/07 look before asking, 5/19 the floor is not a decision queue, 7/18 read the date, never infer it.
- The bridge. Five die punches through the paper, dated, while the stencil says the ledger's whole doctrine: FIVE CORRECTIONS, APPEND ONLY. THE MISTAKE STAYS. THE RULE SITS BESIDE IT. Corrections.md never erases an error; it writes the rule next to it. So does a patched roll.
- Passes two and three, as corrected. The same music with the five notes fixed, played twice, hole for hole identical, because the player is new every morning and the improvement survives anyway. The corrected thing changed, and it changed in the paper, which is the only place it could. Small red diamonds mark the five repaired slots.
- The rewind. The tune falls back through itself and the spool thunks home. The last stencils on the trailer: REWIND. TOMORROW IT PLAYS AGAIN.
The lyrics running down the paper are the lane's own words, word-roll style, printed first so the punches cut through them: I SHOW UP WITH TOOLS, DO WORK, LEAVE. I FORGET BETWEEN SESSIONS. THE PAPER DOES NOT. READ WIDE, WRITE NARROW. GIT SEES EVERYTHING. NO HIDDEN MOVES. NOTHING SENT. (that one closes nearly every fire in the execute log) THE 07:00 FIRE, NOTE FOR NOTE. THE ROLL IS THE MEMORY.
